ANYONE who grew up in the 60's and listened to rock'n'roll music should be able to tell you the difference between rhythm and lead guitars. The standard 5 piece combo consisted of a drummer, bass guitarist, rhythm guitarist, lead guitarist and lead singer (you could also add a keyboard player, etc.). That's just the way it was. Of course, guitarists were not restricted to these roles. However, the typical guitar-driven song consisted of a solid rhythm with the lead guitarist providing fills and flourishes, plus the obligatory solo or "lead break", which was often quite long by the late 60's. The last few years has seen much less extended solos and more simple flourishes, such as the Edge does, for example.
