I've played/toured with Ampegs, Fenders, Vox, and Gibsons, and many models of each. Every time without fail I've always returned to my minuteman.

The big sell for me was playing a show with Dinosaur Jr, who if you aren't familiar are tone/volume snobs. During soundcheck I had my Blackface Showman running on 40 watts and the soundman freaked out about how loud I was. I said "fine" and unplugged it. I had the minuteman in my car, plugged it in and told him to mike it.It was the best sounding show we ever played at that venue (Orang Peel, Asheville).

The Gibsons do have a different voice, and my Duo-medalist kinda looks like a dehumidifier, but they have been the most versatile amps of any I have worked with. Granted, finding a tech that knows how to service one can be a challenge.

Ignore this post. I don't want them getting expensive.

Thanks so much for this review. I completely agree with much of your assessment. I love this amp. I just posted a review to Reverb.com: https://reverb.com/p/gibson-ga-20-minuteman-1966/used

I wish people would stop bashing these for being something they aren't. It's like people who hate hot dogs bashing hot dogs for not being hamburgers, without every bothering to understand the hows and whys of the difference between the two. So you want an amp that distorts more? Fine, but that doesn't make a clean amp a bad amp. It just makes it something outside your preference. As you say, this is a fantastic pedal platform and provides some absolutely lovely clean sounds of its own.

The first channel was basically a microphone channel, back in the days when microphones were unabalanced as well.

Thanks for your input about this Gibson combo model. Very well written and descriptive. I now own three of these. The first one I had came with a replaced speaker. I had at the same time a 1954 GA-20 with a Jensen albino 12 in it. Sounded sweet, but no reverb. And no tremelo either. I like reverb, it's a must have for me. Tremelo, is a plus, but not a deal breaker. Back to the Minuteman, someone put in a 70 watt Celestion ceramic speaker. It just sounded way dark and muddy. So I looked around and opted to try a Celestion 15 watt Blue Bulldog in it. Bingo! It was just exactly what was needed. In fact I believe had these amps come from the Kalamazoo factory equipped with these... The rep these amps get would be quite different today. The other two Minuteman combos still have the original CTS 12" ceramic speakers. I sold the 1954 GA-20 and bought two more Blue Bulldogs, but not yet installed them. It is interesting to have one modified and one stock for side by side comparisons. Friends listen and while some like the amp with CTS... It is overwhelming the WOW factor the modified version gets.
A common response is "I cannot believe the two are the same model amp". Or "Would you sell me one of the modified ones?". In summary I would say, if you find one of these cheap, grab it and just go. If the speaker blows, no worries. Pitch it and put in a Blue Bulldog. Or another quality alnico 12"... a Jensen, etc.
I also advise anyone getting one, to make sure it comes with the pedal switch for tremelo reverb. It has an oddball connection that would likely require modification if you Don't have the original pedal switch. And original covers are a plus, very few have those. But someone can make you a cover. I just lucked out and my three came with pedals and the original covers. But had not the previous owner stuck in such an overrated wattage speaker in the first amp... I might never have made the discovery of what really makes these amps... all they can be.
