I used to sneak around behind my wife’s back and spend money on gear. After about 15 years of delayed arguments and grief I decided that it was time to get some peace in the house, and here’s how I did it. First, I held off on making any purchases for about 6 months. Next, I started buying gear for my son, while announcing my intention to my wife before the purchases. After some time doing that, I would pre-declare my plans, I.e.: “The next time I get a few bucks together, I want to buy that pedal…” to the wifey. And now I just say I’m buying something when I do it, and the grief is over! We’re going on 30 years married and my music room is jam-packed!
Try it, you won’t regret it, fellas.

SMALL-TIME SELLERS BEWARE: I have “followed” Mike Robinson since shortly after he first appeared on the internet (back when Jesus was a baby) and he is a very Good person, but not everyone has the volume and success to absorb the time, cost and problems of people simply backing-out of a transaction already in progress, because “the dog ate the paycheck” or an unforeseen “emergency picnic” popped up, or the ‘old lady’ or ‘old man’ needs some “Midol” or “Viagra”. I always advise a Buyer that for his / her protection I will send a veryfying email to the email address listed for the ebay or Pay Pal account the Buyer desires to purchase from, and that the shipping address the Buyer desires must match the address listed at ebay and / or Pay Pal. That usually puts a screeching halt to scam attempts ….or wakes up eggheads using someone else’s accounts (although using someone else’s account is sometimes authorized and good). If there is a discrepency between those account addresses then using the registered addresses I inform the Buyer that special arrangements authorization must be made by those accounts owner from the email address for those accounts, and. ~~~~~~~ But of course that will not cure someone dumb enough to leave their accounts wide open for someone else to use, especially someone else with a bad or momentary case of G.A.S. ~~~~~~~ If I receive a ‘back-out’ email like the one above that Mike received, after the aforesaid precautions are taken, then I insist that arrangements be made on the telephone by all concerned, to make sure that the ‘back-out’ reasons (or excuse) holds water. ~~~~~~~ Aloha, DT~

It sounds like this guy has some growing up to do. Hopefully he has apologized to his wife, learned the basics of online shopping, and moved on with his life. (Neil, I hope you didn’t mean to imply that it’s somehow unreasonable for a wife to call out her husband on this sort of behavior. We all want more guitars; our wives shouldn’t be made pay for them without their consent….)

I can remember a time when I used to conceal the new acquistions inside those travel-type clothes bags and hang ’em in the long-term walk-in closet until the time was right to “introduce” them to the… ah… family. After nearly 4 decades of marriage, the Mrs. doesn’t much notice the new ones anymore.
