I too have traveled the road of misadventures and poor decisions gear wise. I’m 58 now and much wiser than I was in my youth . I once sold an American Strat for $500 and traded, given away, loaned out never to see again or sold enough gear to open a small music shop but my biggest regret was not taking care of a 61 Gibson Falcon amp that had belonged to my late brother Johnny. I don’t know where the amp( in parts) finally did end up. Some years back I did acquire a 64 model that I still have today, but I still miss that 61 for sentimental reasons along w/ a Decca and a Kent guitar from around the same era.

You don't have to be addicted to make bad gear decisions. I still cringe when thinking about my Selmer Mark VI alto that I didn't appreciate enough, and eBay-ed away for a King Bari. It's a lousy learning curve that those of us who aren't born hoarders have to go through. We only have the Future in which to gain redemption from our horrible past experiences. May God help us, all.

I'm 11 years sober now, but about 12 years ago, I lost my Status bass one night and I have no idea where or how. I just woke up and it was gone. I pawned plenty of nice instruments for next to nothing during my drinking too. Since I've been sober I've replaced most of the guitars I pawned/sold. Life is so much better now I can't even begin to put into words.

So painful to read. As a fellow in recovery, I can relate all too well to the self-loathing and shame of not giving gear the respect it deserves. Now, I don't sell or pawn ANY piece of gear I acquire, not even the Boss PH-3 or EHX Neo Clone I'll surely never use again. If it's not given to a band and/or family member in need, it stays in the studio. Period.
